Disruptive behavior. People sometimes imagine that dogs will be racing around wildly, knocking children down, barking incessantly, and making a mess. Therapy dogs are obedience trained, must be leashed and remain under their handers’ control at all times. The dogs know not to jump up on people, bowl them over, growl or bark, and lick. Groups of therapy dogs typically are remarkably well-behaved and questions about how their calm demeanor was achieved. Many times, people will say, “I could never get my dog to do that!” and ask for advice on dealing with their family dog’s behavioral issues.
